In the presence of Malaysia's King and Queen who toured Lotus' U.K. headquarters, Proton has unveiled a turbocharged version of the 1.6-litre Campro engine—one said to produce the grunt rivalling a 2.0-litre engine's. No figures are made known, but we expect between 140 to 150 horses, and torque levels in excess of 200 Nm. What is needed, though, is for stronger pull from lower down the rev range—something that the normally-aspirated Campro engine struggles with.
According to Proton, the engine is the result of a collaboration between Proton and Lotus, involving 70 engineers for almost two years now. Perhaps mindful of the many complaints regarding Proton Exora's lack of performance, the engine was tuned especially for high torque applications. The engine has passed its proof-of-concept stage, and will be commercially available by 2011.
