Frankfurt Motor Show: 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster has made its world premiere in Frankfurt, featuring frameless doors with conventional hinges—losing the signature gullwing doors—and a fully-automatic, three-layer fabric soft-top roof that opens and closes in 11 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. Of course, the long bonnet, short rear proportions and imposing front end are all unchanged, as is the aviation-inspired interior.
Conceived and engineered alongside the RM 2 million SLS AMG Coupe, the Roadster required minimal reinforcements to its aluminium alloy structure to maintain the stiffness and rigidity of the coupe. The bodyshell of the Roadster weighs a mere 2.3 kg more than the coupe's. Overall, with the soft-top roof and hydraulic motors to run it, the Roadster is still only 40 kg heavier than the coupe, weighing in at 1660 kg.
The powertrain is borrowed from the coupe, meaning that a 6.3-litre V8 AMG engine continues to churn out 571 hp at 6800 rpm and 650 Nm at 4750 rpm, all of which are directed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Mercedes quotes the same 3.8 seconds century sprint time for both models and the same top speed of 317 km/h, which can be reached even when the Roadster is topless.
