The persistent rumours have been proven true: Fernando Alonso, Renault’s ace driver, will be joining Ferrari for the 2010 season. Speculation have been mounting for some time now, especially with Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen rumoured to join McLaren. Alonso has put pen to paper a three-year deal, replacing Raikkonen and partnering Felipe Massa. Giancarlo Fisichella will be the reserve driver.
“We are very proud to welcome to our team another winning driver, who has demonstrated his amazing talent by winning two World Championships in his career to date”, Ferrari team head Stefano Domenicali said about the 28-year-old Alonso.
Praising Raikkonen, Domenicali mentioned: “In his first year with us, he managed to win the drivers' title, thus making his contribution to Ferrari's history and he played a vital role in our taking of the constructors' title in 2007 and 2008”. Raikkonen will complete the season for Ferrari by taking part in the remaining three races. As it stands, it is increasingly likely that the 2007 World Champion would now move to McLaren.
