The 2011 new Toyota Fortuner has been launched by UMW Toyota Motor, following the arrival of the 2011 Toyota Hilux facelift in Malaysia late last month. Like its mechanical sibling from the IMV range, the new Fortuner is hardly all-new, coming with a more handsome front end and more equipment. The underlying platform and powertrains are expectedly untouched. The 2011 Toyota Fortuner range starts with the 2.5G variant at RM 167,990, the 2.5G TRD Sportivo variant at RM 171,448, the 2.7V variant at RM 178,990, and the 2.7V TRD Sportivo variant at RM 182,488. (Prices are on-the-road with insurance and include a three-year/100,000km warranty.)
Along with the introduction of a new colour, Dark Steel Mica, to replace Coal Black, the facelifted Fortuner now has a new chrome grille and restyled headlamps in front, revised tail lights behind, as well as body-coloured side mirrors with turn signal light and subtly revised character lines on the overfenders around the wheel arches, which are filled with redesigned 17" alloys. The TRD Sportivo package comprises unique stripes and an aerokit with front and rear bumper spoilers.
The cabin is now of a darker colour in response to customer feedback, Toyota says. The centre console has been restyled for a horizontally-based design. The Fortuner 2.5G features silver trimming to lift the ambience, with black wood grain and chrome trims reserved for the Fortuner 2.7V. The new four-spoke steering wheel is now fitted with audio controls in the Fortuner 2.7V. The manual air-conditioning's control dials in the Fortuner 2.5G have been revised, and a gear position indicator has been added to the instrument panel. The six-speaker audio system with a 2-DIN head unit has been upgraded to include iPod, AUX, and USB connectivity, on top of the existing AM/FM radio receiver, single-disc CD-player and MP3 playback ability.
Goodies like the automatic air-conditioning and a six-way electrically-adjustable driver's seat are only available with the Fortuner 2.7V. Optional items include Premium Solar Film and a DVD-AVN system that encompasses a DVD-player, Bluetooth system, GPS navigation system, a reverse camera and a 6.1" colour monitor. The standard safety kit is not that comprehensive, however, with dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Load-Sensing Proportioning and Bypass Valve (LSP & BV).
The powertrains are carried forward, from the 102 PS, 260 Nm 2.5-litre D-4D turbodiesel engine to the 160 PS, 241 Nm 2.7-litre VVT-i petrol engine, both of which are mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. A full-time 4x4 system is used, with a Torsen LSD (Torque Sensing Limited Slip Differential) device to vary the torque distribution between the front and rear axles. To tackle more difficult conditions, the centre differential can be locked to achieve a 50:50 torque split, and High or Low gear ranges are available as well.
