Subaru has unveiled the 2012 Subaru XV at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Subaru's first-ever foray into the compact crossover segment, where style plays an equally important role alongside functionality, the XV is of special interest to Malaysians because it will be the first Subaru to be locally-assembled for the ASEAN region, specifically Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
The manufacturer of Subaru cars, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding with Motor Image, the official Subaru distributor wholly owned by the Tan Chong Group, to commence assembly of Subaru models at existing Tan Chong manufacturing facilities in Malaysia from October 2012. The annual sales target set for the region is 5000 units.
The Subaru XV oozes exterior visual sportiness and offers interior quality and practicality, the Japanese automaker is keen to put across. More significant is the latest range of third-generation Boxer petrol and diesel engines that is more fuel-efficient and cleaner than before. The all-new FB engines replace the current EJ engines, which have been in use for 21 years.
The only engine to be offered in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia will be a 148 hp, 196 Nm 2.0-litre Boxer petrol unit, which will be paired to Subaru's new Lineartronic CVT gearbox, an all-new advanced stop-start system, and the firm's famous Symmetrical AWD system.
