BMW Malaysia has launched the 2011 BMW 1-Series Coupe and 1-Series Convertible, updated models that come with a facelift and new equipment—for no price increase: the BMW 135i Coupe costs RM 423,800 and the BMW 120i Convertible costs RM 319, 800 (on-the-road without insurance). With only over 30 units of the pre-facelift 135i Coupe and 120i Convertible sold, BMW Malaysia believes that both four-seater models would continue to be exclusive despite the latest updates.
The new BMW 1-Series Coupe and 1-Series Convertible models get two new exterior colours—Vermilion Red and Marrakesh Brown, along with revised xenon headlamps, LED taillights and enlarged air intakes. Only the BMW 120i Convertible comes with a BMW EfficientDynamics invention called Air Curtain: directed into the wheel arches via openings at the front, incoming air is steered through a slim opening past the outer edge of the front wheels, creating an air curtain over the front wheels, thus reducing turbulence in the wheel arches and improving aerodynamics. Brake Energy Regeneration is reserved for the BMW 135i Coupe.
The cabin of both the BMW 1-Series Convertible and 1-Series Coupe is now uplifted by a chrome trim and an optional Savannah Beige colour for the leather upholstery, which, in the case of the BMW 120i Convertible, features SunReflective Technology that reflects long-wave light from the sun, preventing the heating up of cabin surfaces. The roof requires a quick 22 seconds to open and close.
The BMW 135i Coupe is equipped with the latest BMW ConnectedDrive innovations: on-board Internet surfing which makes use of the Internet connection tethered from the smartphone; Bluetooth Audio Streaming function through which music files can be wirelessly transferred from the mobile phone to the on-board audio system; and the Innovative Office function which allows emails on Blackberry smartphones to be shown on the on-board display via Bluetooth.
The BMW 135i Coupe powers on with the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that churns out 306 hp at 5800 rpm and 400 Nm between 1200–5000 rpm. Straight line performance is impressive, as the century sprint takes a mere 5.2 seconds. Fuel economy is reasonable at 11.8 km/litre. The BMW 120i Convertible takes 10.0 seconds to complete the 0-100 km/h dash, drawing motivation from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 156 hp at 6400 rpm and 200 Nm at 3600 rpm, while consuming 12.1 km/litre of petrol.
