New Proton Models To Be Offered With CVT Gearbox Option ‘In The Near Future’

Proton has officially announced that Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) technology will be introduced on Proton models “in the near future”, without providing details on the timeline. To be made available as an option alongside the current four-speed automatic gearbox, the CVT gearbox boasts a number of benefits over a conventional automatic gearbox centering mainly on driving smoothness and overall efficiency.

According to tests conducted by Proton, the use of a CVT gearbox improves the fuel economy of Proton Campro engines by up to four percent in urban driving and up to 10 percent in highway driving. The improvement in fuel efficiency will translate into monetary savings for Proton owners at a time of increasing fuel prices, Proton said in an official statement. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by five percent as well.

Almost 20 percent lighter than a comparable conventional automatic gearbox, the CVT gearbox allows for seamless gear ratio changes, the elimination of transmission shock, better powertrain responsiveness, and a smooth, consistent power delivery. Proton added that the CVT gearbox will be able to offer various driving modes, catering for a wider spectrum of preferences.
