Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel returned to winning ways in the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, comfortably leading 57 laps from beginning to end after an early charge all but destroyed rivals' chance of overtaking him. With plenty of home support, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso took second position, with the last podium position going to another Red Bull driver, Mark Webber. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button finished fourth and sixth, respectively, with Ferrari's Felipe Massa sandwiched in between at fifth.
Winning six times out of eight races this year, and still managing second position in the two he did not win, Vettel now leads the Drivers' World Championship by 77 points, ahead of Webber and Button, both of whom are on 109 points. This impressive record makes the 23-year-old German the first driver in Formula One history to be placed either first or second eight races after the start of the season.
