The 2012 Porsche Panamera Diesel has been revealed ahead of sales starting across Europe in August 2011. Identical to petrol-powered Panamera variants except for the “diesel” lettering on the front doors, the Panamera Diesel is the most fuel-efficient variant in the model range, consuming less fuel than the Panamera Hybrid, which already manages to extract an impressive 14.7 km/litre from its 3.0-litre V6 TSI petrol engine.
The Volkswagen-sourced, Porsche-tuned 3.0-litre V6 TDI uses common-rail direct injection and variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs), producing 250 hp at 3800–4400 rpm and 550 Nm at 1750–2750 rpm. Power goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission. 0-100 km/h takes 6.8 seconds, and top speed stands at 242 km/h.
With the help from an engine start-stop system, the Panamera Diesel returns 15.4 km/litre fuel economy and emits 172 grams/km carbon emissions when fitted with standard tyres. Those figures improve to 15.9 km/litre and 167 grams/km with optional low rolling resistance tyres; the former translating into a range of more than 1200 km with the 80-litre tank.
