All-Electric Nissan Leaf Wins 2011 World Car Of The Year Award

The Nissan Leaf has been crowned the 2011 World Car of the Year, narrowly beating the BMW 5-Series in second and the Audi A8 in third. The first electric vehicle to win the prestigious award, which involves 66 jurors from 24 countries, the Leaf emerged victorious with 733.4 points from a group of 40 cars. The 5-Series was close behind with 730.0 points, followed by the A8 with 709.0 points.
The Leaf, the world's first mass-produced electric vehicle, was however second fiddle to the Chevrolet Volt, the world's first mass-produced series hybrid/extended range electric vehicle, which it comes to the awarding of the 2011 World Green Car of the Year. The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition was also a runner up.
Elsewhere, the Ferrari 458 Italia won the 2011 World Performance Car of the Year, ahead of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Porsche 911 Turbo. The 2011 World Car Design of the Year went to the Aston Martin Rapide, which outshone the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and the Ferrari 458 Italia in the eyes of the 66 jurors.
