UMW Toyota Motor Rolls Out One Millionth Unit In Malaysia

UMW Toyota Motor has reached a significant milestone in Malaysia, rolling out the one millionth locally-assembled Toyota—a Toyota Vios TRD Sportivo—from a plant owned by Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB), a subsidiary under UMW Toyota Motor that is into its 43rd year of operation.

Founded in 1968, ASSB had arrived at the 500,000th unit milestone back in 2000, but ramped up production substantially in the past decade to be able to hit the one millionth mark so soon. With a local Toyota lineup comprising the Vios, Fortuner, Hilux, Innova and Hiace, ASSB has become the first non-national car manufacturer to reach the one millionth unit milestone.

Having already spent RM 900 million in the past five years, UMW Toyota Motor is investing a further RM 1 billion into its local operations over the next three years, of which RM 350 million has been set aside to upgrade ASSB's plant in Shah Alam, which will begin assembling the all-new Toyota Camry in 2012.
