The 2011 all-new, third-generation BMW 6-Series Convertible has arrived in Malaysia for RM 868,800 (on-the-road without insurance, with BMW Service Inclusive + Repair), the price which you have to pay to drive home the only 6-Series Convertible variant launched locally—the 640i.
Longer, wider and lower than the seven-year-old second-generation 6-Series, the all-new 6-Series Convertible exudes elegance not seen before, boasting classic grand tourer proportions, a low, athletic stance, flowing lines and a distinctively contoured bonnet. At a touch of a button, the multi-layered canvas roof opens in 19 seconds and closes in 24 seconds, operating at speeds of up to 40 km/h.
The 6-Series Convertible is marketed as a 2+2 seater with a maximum capacity of 350 litres—space enough for two large golf bags even with the roof down. The cabin is driver-oriented with an asymmetric dash layout, while for maximum comfort, the dual-zone climate control is equipped with a convertible mode and the leather upholstery benefits from SunReflective Technology, which ensures that the seats heat up much less when in direct sunshine.
Powering the 640i is an uprated version of the venerable N55B30 3.0-litre turbocharged, direct-injected in-line six-cylinder engine that is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with sport paddle shifters. The generated 320 hp between 5800-6000 rpm and 450 Nm between 1300-4500 rpm provide the 640i with enough oomph to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds, and go on to hit the 250 km/h top speed.
Contributing to the official fuel economy of 12.7 km/litre and carbon emissions of 185 grams/km is the usual host of BMW EfficientDynamics measures including the engine Auto Start/Stop feature and electromechanical power steering.
The 6-Series Convertible has to stay true to BMW's message of driving pleasure. For that, BMW has turned to the same platform that underpins the current 5-Series and 7-Series. The chassis is set up with double wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear, wide front/rear tracks and 50/50 front/rear weight distribution. High-tech features such as the Integral Active Steering and the three-mode Driving Dynamics Control can only add on to the 6-Series Convertible's dynamic capability.
Leading the equipment list is the standard iDrive feature with Control Display, allowing the central command system to be operated via a 10.2" LCD screen. Also standard are the BMW Navigation System Professional and the BMW ConnectedDrive system, a suite of features comprising Bluetooth functionality, BMW Head-up Display and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition among others.
