The 2011 all-new Volvo S60 has been launched in Malaysia in two fully-imported variants, the 2.0 T5 and 3.0 T6 AWD, costing RM 288,000 and RM 348,000, respectively (prices are OTR without insurance). Available in two colours, Vibrant Copper and Flamenco Red, the all-new S60 was launched at the remote Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang, where Volvo Car Malaysia intended and succeeded in showing off the S60's new-found dynamics and latest safety gadgets.
The S60 T5 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine with 240 hp at 5500 rpm and 320 Nm between 1800–5000 rpm. A six-speed Powershift dual-clutch transmission directs the power to the front wheels, allowing the S60 T5 to complete the century sprint in 7.5 seconds. The S60 T6 uses a 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged, direct-injected straight-six engine producing 304 hp at 5600 rpm and 440 Nm between 2100–4200 rpm. Power goes to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic torque converter transmission—enough for the S60 T6 to hit 100 km/h from rest in 6.1 seconds.
Based on the same Ford EUCD platform, with front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link setup, that also underpins the XC60 and S80, the all-new S60 is said to be endowed with sportiness never seen in its predecessors, thanks to stiffer springs and bushes, higher degree of damping and improved steering. The S60 T5 has the Dynamic chassis, while the S60 T6 is equipped with the self-adjusting Four-C chassis with three driving modes to choose from—Comfort, Sport and Advanced.
On top of the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), there is the Advanced Stability Control—an anti-skid system that corrects oversteer by detecting and reacting to skidding tendencies at an early stage, allowing for rapid directional changes and better handling—and the Corner Traction Control, a torque vectoring system that resists understeer in corners by braking the inner driven wheel and transferring more torque to the outer driven wheel at the same time.
Chief among the safety systems is the Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection, a system that alerts the driver with visual and audible signals when the S60 closes in on another car, or when a pedestrian is anticipated to cross the S60's path, before the system automatically intervenes by braking when the need arises. Others include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Information System, Driver Alert Control and City Safety, a system that prevents low-speed (up to 30 km/h) rear-end impacts by braking the S60 when the driver fails to react in time to a car in front that suddenly slows or stops.
