The 2012 BMW M5 Concept has been unveiled, ahead of its official appearance at the Shanghai Motor Show in mid-April. Essentially production-ready, the M5 Concept wears an aggressive front bumper with huge air intakes, side gills along the front fenders, a remodeled rear bumper with a diffuser and quad tail-pipes, and a subtle bootlid spoiler.
Lurking underneath the bonnet of the M5 Concept is a new twin-turbocharged V8 powerplant, a more powerful version of the 555 hp, 680 Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine powering the X5 M. BMW has not confirmed the output increment, but suffice to say the all-new M5 should be no slouch, considering that the X5 M sprints from rest to 100 km/h in a mere 4.7 seconds. Engine auto start/stop technology should improve the fuel economy.
The generated power is directed to the rear wheels by a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission with Drivelogic. Exclusive M features include 20" forged alloy wheels, 265/35 ZR20 front/rear tyres, suspension and brake upgrades, as well as a new Active M differential that applies different amounts of torque on the right and left rear wheels required for achieving stability.
