More affordable Subaru cars would be coming your way in the next two years, going by a report published in the Nikkei Japanese business newspaper. Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd, the manufacturer of Subaru vehicles, is teaming up with Motor Image Enterprises, the Singapore-based distributor of Subaru cars, to begin local assembly operations in Malaysia by 2013.
Although still awaiting official confirmation which will be announced on March 24, the collaboration will make Malaysia the regional assembly hub for Subaru, a move deemed necessary if Fuji Heavy Industries wants to increase sales from the many developing markets in the ASEAN region. The annual production rate is estimated at around 5000 units, the report added, with the first model to enter local assembly being the Subaru Forester.
