Tata Motors, the Indian automaker under the conglomerate Tata Group, is interested in working with Proton to establish a bigger role in the Malaysian car market. A possible arrangement would be the sale of the Tata Nano—the world-cheapest car costing 100,000 Indian rupees or around 6750 ringgit—in Malaysia.
This news is neither speculation nor rumour, coming straight from the people at the top—more specifically Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata who conveyed his intention to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is on a five-day official visit to three Indian cities.
“About seven or eight years ago, there were some joint discussions to manufacture cars but nothing came out of it”, Muhyiddin said to the Malaysian press while in India. “We have suggested to Tata to bring a technical team to hold further discussions with Proton and even Perodua”.
“It's now up to the Proton management to study this proposal and see whether a car like the Nano can be brought into Malaysia”, Muhyiddin continued, suggesting that the Nano could someday become Malaysia's People's Car, a title now held by the Proton Saga. “Perhaps we can also come up with a Kereta Rakyat costing about RM 20,000, modeled after the Nano”.
