Lotus Renault GP, the Renault F1 team with Proton-owned Lotus as the title sponsor, has launched the R31, its Formula 1 car for 2011, in Valencia. Wearing the previously-revealed black-and-gold livery, the R31 was unveiled on the pit lane by Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov, the two main drivers, with test and reserve drivers Bruno Senna, Romain Grosjean, Jan Charouz, Ho-Ping Tung and Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy also present.
Compared with the R30, which is an evolution of its predecessor, the R31 is built out of an entirely rethinked design with more than 92 percent of all parts being new. James Allison, Technical Director of the team, believes that the R31 is truly deserving of the descriptions “innovative” and “aggressive”.
“It's true to say that the car has been designed in an ambitious manner, and a quick glance at the layout will confirm that its entire concept differs considerably”, Allison said, “not just from last year's car, but from any car this team has ever produced”.
