Toyota has retained the world's number one automaker title, measured by total sales volume in 2010, beating out General Motors and Volkswagen. Toyota, including sales of its subsidiaries Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino, sold 8.42 million vehicle units in 2010, 8 percent more than in 2009. Toyota grew sales in China, the world's largest market, by 19 percent, outweighing U.S. sales that slowed by 0.4 percent no thanks to the negative publicity generated by the massive recalls.
In 2010, the second-placed GM managed to grow sales by 29 percent in China, while sales in its U.S. home-ground rose 6 percent, contributing to a total of 8.39 million units, a 12 percent increase compared with 2009's sales volume. Taking the final podium position is Volkswagen with 7.14 million units, which represent a growth of 14 percent year-on-year.
