Lotus Racing/Team Lotus has won the summary judgment hearing against Group Lotus at the British courts, allowing the use of the Team Lotus name for the upcoming 2011 F1 season. The presiding High Court Justice Peter Smith dismissed with arguments from either side, and brought forward the court hearing date for the full trial to March 21.
“Although this decision was never in doubt, it means that we start the 2011 season under the Team Lotus name”, an official statement from Team Lotus said. “Whilst we expected that the Judge would refuse this application, it is good to have the decision in black and white”.
As expected, Team Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes was in a jubilant mood, tweeting online how he is “very happy over the judgment” and “extremely happy that the full trial was brought forward”. “The good do always eventually win”, Fernandes added, in effect labeling Proton-owned Lotus the bad side as the two Malaysian-backed outfits continue to spar for the right to use the Team Lotus name.
