Styling
Not the prettiest Ferrari, unlike its predecessor, the Ferrari 456 GT, which at one time was described by many as the most beautiful car ever made. Still, the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti sits with dignified demeanour, exuding elegance, like all Ferraris do. The curves of the wheel arches, bonnet, cabin and tail serve up aerodynamic purposes, but at the same time lending the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti distinctive looks. More of a grand tourer than other Ferraris, the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti was styled to appear more relaxed, but nonetheless it possesses massive road presence.
Handling
The 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti boasts of a number of firsts, including the CST electronic stability and traction control system, and the use of both an all-aluminium space frame chassis and body. The latter reducing the weight count by 40 percent while preserving excellent torsional rigidity. On the roads, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is more laid-back compared to other Ferraris, but wearing the prancing horse means still extraordinary driving dynamics. Indeed, the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti combines perfect steering with giddy-high levels of grip, while maintaining composure however you push it. CST allows for optimal performance in tandem with complete safety.
Comfort
Built with grand touring abilities in mind, the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti rides comfortably over most surfaces. Refinement is similarly high on the list with little wind and road noise at legal speeds. Luckily though, the V12 Ferrari-made soundtrack is highly audible. Multiple electrical adjustments make it easy to find the ideal driving position. Drivers sit in supportive seats, while the visibility is good for a sports coupe. Add easy-to-use controls and the cabin seems tailor-made for long-distance cruising.
Quality + Reliability
The interior is where the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti shines. As the flagship of the Ferrari range, as least price-wise, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti underlines its grand tourer pretension with a truly special cabin. First-rate materials assembled with exemplary fit-and-finish are the order of the day. While Ferrari is known for their high-performance, their Italian flair has clearly graced the beautifully-crafted cabin. Considering the tremendous amount of work in constructing this car, we have no doubts that the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti will be reliable with the proper maintenance.
Performance
At the heart of 612 is the 5.7-litre V12 engine, punching out 540 bhp at 7250 rpm and 588 Nm at 5250 rpm. The performance is quite as stunning as the numbers suggest. Acceleration can be as unrelenting as you want; the urge enormous at any rpm. The 0-100 km/h sprint taking only 4.2 seconds. In addition to the raw power, the V12 is wonderfully flexible during city driving. A six-speed F1A (the A stands for Automatic) paddle-shift gearbox is available.
Roominess
Having two rear seats differentiates the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti among supercars, while concreting its claim as a true grand tourer. The front driver and passenger sit with plenty of head- and leg-room.The rear does less well. Although the rear legroom is barely sufficient, rear headroom is good, and can seat two but not for too long before they need to stretch. The boot, though irregularly shaped, is large by supercar standards.
Running Costs
Fuel consumption at 4.8 km/litre is abysmal. While road tax and insurance are similarly scary. The biggest running costs will have to be the servicing and depreciation. To maintain peak performance, servicing will be regular and expensive. The desirable Ferrari brand, and the long wait for a new Ferrari 612 Scaglietti will help mitigate depreciation, but mileage and condition will determine the residual value to a large extent. With the sky-high price, a small depreciation still represents a lot of money (for non-Ferrari owners).
Value for Money
The 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is a very expensive car, even by the Italian supercar maker's standards. Compared to other two-plus-two coupes, such as the likes of the Aston Martin DB9 or Bentley Continental GT, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is priced out of contention, or should we say out of this segment. Like other Ferraris, the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is another piece of fine Italian artwork, one that offers perfect craftsmanship and high performance. For those eyeing a Ferrari and do not need the rear seats, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano delivers similar mind-blowing performance for lesser money.
Equipment
Numerous high-tech gadgets are actually working out of sight, while occupants enjoy the beautiful leather interior. Getting a Ferrari means plenty of personalisation—satellite-navigation and Bluetooth technology are some of the many available options. Only the leather interior, electronic safety aids, and dual front airbags are standard. The reason for installing only two airbags? Ferrari claims the strength in the 612 Scaglietti's structure negates the need for side airbags…
Environment
Emitting 475 g/km of carbon dioxide, the 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is a significant lot more harmful to the environment than the Ferrari F430 at 345 g/km. Fortunately, there are not many on the roads (due to the high price tag), and for the few on the roads, they do not drive long distances (due to huge running costs). Greenpeace activists sure hope we are right.
