2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo at a glance
The 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo is essentially the same car as the Polo. But when the fun, sporty looks and generous equipment count come at a competitive price, the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo becomes a value proposition.

Styling
Designed to be a baby SUV in the so-called urban jungle, the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo looks sporty and adventurous compared to the Volkswagen Polo, featuring a higher suspension setup, side and wheel arch protectors, sports design bumpers, 17-inch alloy wheels, plus silver-painted side mirror housings, roof rails and stone guards. The chic interior comes with front sports seats, leather steering wheel with decorative stitching and aluminium inserts, leather handbrake lever and gearshift knob, plus aluminium-look pedals.
Handling
The 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo drives much like the Polo, meaning a painless and easy drive with little fun on the menu. Through bends, the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo runs out of grip quickly and lurches around uneasily. The lack of dynamics and a steering that returns little feedback indicate a ride-and-handling balance heavily slanted towards the former.
Comfort
With plenty of suspension travel, the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo rides pliantly over most surfaces. By class standards, wind and road noise are kept out excellently, although engine noise features relatively prominently. Controls are clearly laid out and simple to use, but the seats are too soft to provide sufficient support. Drivers get seat-height and reach-and-height steering adjustments to fine-tune an otherwise high default seating position.
Quality + Reliability
Like Toyota, Volkswagen stands for quality, and that holds true for lower-end models like the Polo and CrossPolo. Build quality is predictably high in standard, while the materials used commensurate with the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo's price and positioning and are only decent in quality. We expect the solid cabin construction and durable materials to stand the test of time, and the same can be said for the underlying mechanicals, which have remained in production for some time now.
Performance
Under the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo's bonnet lies an in-line four-cylinder 1.6-litre engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Producing 103 bhp at 5600 rpm and 153 Nm at 3800 rpm, the engine needs to be pushed to inject any real pace. It may get the job done, but does so barely adequately. The engine soundtrack is also hardly tuneful, but at least there are six gear ratios not seen in any rivals.
Roominess
The 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo offers the same cabin space as the Polo. Four can be seated passably, but many modern rivals offer rear legroom that makes the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo's seem cramped by comparison. The well-shaped boot is at least decent in size, and the rear seats fold for more loading space, although they cannot split like in the Volkswagen Polo.
Running Costs
The 1.6-litre drivetrain returns a reasonable 13.2 km/litre, thanks to its six gear ratios. The 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo's servicing and repair costs are higher than for Japanese rivals. Depreciation should be mitigated by the Volkswagen badge, although the CrossPolo's niche appeal means that leading Japanese rivals still hold their values better.
Value for Money
Raising the height and adding a number of exterior and interior features is how the Volkswagen CrossPolo came about from the Polo. We found the Volkswagen Polo to be behind the times, and while the Volkswagen CrossPolo is essentially the same car underneath, the fun, sporty looks and generous equipment count at a competitive price make the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo a value proposition.
Equipment
Standard equipment count is generous, including fog lights, powered side mirrors with side turn signal, “Climatic” air conditioning, CD/MP3/radio player with 4 speakers, power windows, roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, front sports seats, leather steering wheel, plus leather handbrake lever and gearshift knob. Safety equipment includes Anti-locking Brake System (ABS) with comfort brake assistant, dual front airbags, and curtain airbag for front and rear passenger plus side airbag for the front.
Environment
Considering the 2010 Volkswagen CrossPolo's weight increase over the Polo, carbon dioxide emissions of 179 grams/km are actually quite good, and some credit has to go to the six gear ratios on hand. That said, many Japanese rivals are more environmentally friendly, emitting less carbon dioxide and consuming less fuel per distance travelled.
