Styling
Easily the best-looking Suzuki, and perhaps the most handsome hatchback in our market, the 2010 Suzuki Swift looks sporty, stylish and bold. The styling appeal is broad enough to transcend genders and appeal to the female population looking for something chic. Stylish on the outside and neat on the inside, the 2010 Suzuki Swift's styling alone will win it plenty of sales.
Handling
The best handling hatchback in its class, the 2010 Suzuki Swift is nimble and enthusiastic through bends, driving in a grown-up manner that belies its compact dimensions. Thanks to its sporty, agile chassis, the 2010 Suzuki Swift grips strongly and corners tidily. The sharp steering could provide more feedback, however.
Comfort
The suspension is firm, with bigger bumps and deeper potholes making their presence felt in a pronounced manner. The ride can become jiggly over rougher surfaces, too. Refinement is decent at cruising speeds, with some noticeable wind noise and engine drone. A comfortable driving position is accompanied by seat-height adjustments, but the steering column is only tilt-adjustable. Excellent all-round visibility aids city driving, while the controls are well-placed for easy usage.
Quality + Reliability
The simple, neat cabin feels solid and built-to-last. While materials are generally of a good quality, some hard, unappealing plastics are also in place. Fit-and-finish are however brilliant, and controls all work with slickness. Given Suzuki's reputation for building reliable cars, major mechanicals such as the engine and transmission should stand the test of time.
Performance
The 2010 Suzuki Swift's drivetrain consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Churning out 100 bhp at 6000 rpm and 133 Nm at 4000 rpm, the 1.5-litre puts in a surprisingly punchy performance, and should be powerful enough for the Suzuki Swift's target audience. And while the four-speed automatic shifts smoothly, the 2010 Suzuki Swift really should be sampled with a manual transmission instead.
Roominess
The 2010 Suzuki Swift is not the biggest nor the most versatile in its class, but can carry four in comfort. Front two enjoy no lack of room, while rear passengers get less generous though still adequate legroom. Boot space is limited, but the rear seats can 60/40 split-fold for additional loading space when required.
Running Costs
Fuel economy stands at a very good 15.4 km/litre. Maintenance and repairs should be affordable, too. Depreciation could be the biggest expense as the Suzuki brand is still not the most desirable in the resale market. That said, the highly popular Swift and other improving Suzuki models will enhance the Suzuki brand's credibility over time.
Value for Money
The 2010 Suzuki Swift's attractive pricing, made possible by local assembly, takes key rivals such as the Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris out of the equation. Even without the price advantage, the 2010 Suzuki Swift makes a different yet compelling alternative, leading on styling, handling and performance, and scoring well in other areas of consideration, too. With the price advantage, the 2010 Suzuki Swift is just great value.
Equipment
Standard equipment includes power windows, central door locking, keyless entry and start, auto-retractable side mirrors with signal indicator, electromagnetic tailgate opener, alarm system with immobiliser, reverse sensor, 15" alloy wheels, steering wheel audio switches, MP3/CD/radio player and six speakers. Safety kit includes dual front SRS airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The Swift Premier adds V-Kool, body kit and leather seats.
Environment
Carbon dioxide emissions of 153 grams/km is decent. Although that figure is not great for a small car, the 2010 Suzuki Swift still pollutes far less than most cars on our roads. Local assembly of the Suzuki Swift also helps to reduce pollution compared to importing cars straight from Japan or other countries.
