Styling
The 2010 Peugeot 407 is certainly not the sleekest or the prettiest, but its road presence is unmistakable. The bold, distinctive styling never fails to attract attention wherever it goes. The interior styling is, on the other hand, comparatively conservative.
Handling
Not a car aimed at providing driving pleasure. The chassis reacts reasonably well to inputs, and grip levels are good. However, the 2010 Peugeot 407's size and mass blunts its maneuverability. The light steering helps in city driving but offers too little feedback for any involvement.
Comfort
At higher speeds, noise levels are impressively low, while the ride feels smooth and settled. It is a pity, then, that the ride feels firm at lower speeds, struggling over rough surfaces and urban bumps. Despite the electrically-operated driver seat and height/reach-adjustable steering wheel, finding a comfortable driving position is not that easy. Ergonomics are decent, with well-placed switchgear and key controls. But the multitude of buttons on the centre console will need getting used to.
Quality + Reliability
Residing in a segment with the likes of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the 2010 Peugeot 407 needs cabin quality of a certain high standard to compete effectively. While the build quality is solid and materials used are sound, both areas still have room for improvement compared to the class-leaders'. The 2010 Peugeot 407 should, however, remain mechanically reliable with little glitches or problems.
Performance
Underneath the bonnet lies a 2.0-litre in-line-four DOHC engine with variable valve timing, producing 140 bhp at 6000 rpm and 200 Nm at 4000 rpm. A four-speed automatic adaptive gearbox with “Porsche Tiptronic System” is standard. The adaptive function adapts the gear-shifting pattern over time to cater for individual driving style. On the roads, the engine puts in a respectable performance whether in the city or on the highways.
Roominess
Front driver and passenger will have no complaints regarding room, and the rear can seat two in comfort and three at the compromise of shoulder room. Rear legroom is decent, but rear headroom will be lacking for passengers over 1.8 metres. The well-shaped boot has a large capacity, with the option to expand the loading space via the split-fold rear seats.
Running Costs
Fuel consumption of 11.4 km/litre, while still acceptable for the 2010 Peugeot 407's size, lags class-leaders' frugality by some distance. Maintenance and repair costs should be affordable. Depreciation could be the biggest running cost. Although the Peugeot 407 does not retain its value anywhere near the best in the class, the situation is improving with Naza taking over the Peugeot brand in Malaysia.
Value for Money
We have a value buy in the 2010 Peugeot 407. A well-engineered, well-equipped large Peugeot sedan at such attractive prices represents good value for the money. Like for the 206 Bestari, Naza has offered an usually expensive Continental car at more affordable prices. The 2010 Peugeot 407 may not be class-leading in abilities overall, but it stands out with its bold, distinctive styling and an excellent equipment level.
Equipment
As standard, the 407 Classic gets 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlamps, fog lights, reverse sensor, electric mirrors, electric front seats, cruise control, central locking, 10-speaker JBL hi-fi system and in-dash 6-disc CD-changer. Standard safety equipments include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and a generous seven airbags. The 407 Premium adds leather upholstery and 7-inch LCD screen with GPS navigation system.
Environment
The mediocre fuel economy is matched by an equally unexceptional carbon dioxide emissions level, meaning the 2010 Peugeot 407 is, once again, some distance behind Japanese class-leaders in environmental awareness.
