2010 Perodua Myvi at a glance

The best looking Perodua thus far, the 2010 Perodua Myvi excels as a city car, bringing plenty of style and room at the same time. The ride and refinement could be better but overall the 2010 Perodua Myvi deservedly earned its most popular tag.

Styling

After years of success, Perodua decided to give their most popular car a facelift. Not that the original design needed any changes as it is still neat and likeable. The 2010 Perodua Myvi now features all-new front grille and bonnet, front and rear bumpers, and interior instrument panel design. The Special Edition (SE) variant carries the new look, with aggressive cues such as the round fog lamps, smoked headlights, bodykit and bronze-coloured wheels.

Handling

Safe, predictable but not sporty handling. Grip levels are not high, while the city-suited light steering feels vague in response. That aside, the 2010 Perodua Myvi drives sprightly, exhibiting decent body control. The tight turning circle also helps in city driving. Overall, the 2010 Perodua Myvi excels as a city car as long as you are not expecting too much of the handling.

Comfort

The suspension soaks up bumps quite well, although the ride could be more supple. Wind, road and engine noise build up at highway speeds, making long-distance journeys more tiring than they should be. Integrated seat height adjuster is available for all 2010 Perodua Myvi variants except the SR, SX and EZ, while tiltable steering is standard for all. For variants without seat height adjuster, drivers may find it hard to get comfortable. The well-placed controls provide for good ergonomics, and all-round visibility is similarly brilliant. The rear seating bench is flat and unsupportive however.

Quality + Reliability

The dashboard is well put together, and there is a slickness to how the controls operate which is not found on the Proton Saga. Admittedly, hard, unappealing cabin plastics are not hard to find, but reliability should be higher on the list as major components and mechanics are shared with the Daihatsu Sirion, which has proven itself to be durable.

Performance

The 1.0-litre engine with 58 bhp feels anaemic on the roads and should be avoided. The 1.3-litre with 86 bhp delivers reasonable performance when paired with the five-speed manual. But the four-speed automatic offers convenience at the expense of pace and fuel economy. Overtaking, especially in automatic variant, will take some planning ahead. And when pushed, the engine whines in an unsatisfying manner. The four-speed however picks the right gears at the right time, and reacts to throttle movement correctly.

Roominess

The 2010 Perodua Myvi is surprisingly accommodating given its relatively small size. The Perodua Myvi can carry four in comfort, with front and rear occupants enjoying loads of head- and leg-room, and five at a squeeze for the rear three. The boot space is limited with rear seats in place, but can be increased by 60/40 split-folding or folding flat the rear seats. Perodua also deserves praise for creating the wide opening doors.

Running Costs

Fuel economy for both engines is excellent, especially when paired with the manual transmission. The 2010 Perodua Myvi's maintenance and repair costs should be highly affordable. Of the running costs, depreciation poses the greatest concern. Although the Perodua Myvi has built up a fine reputation since its launch, which will support the residual values, the Myvi's ubiquity on Malaysian roads will definitely bring down the resale prices.

Value for Money

For anyone seeking a stylish, roomy and well-priced city car, the 2010 Perodua Myvi would be a guaranteed top spot on their lists. But with the Proton Saga's entrance into the local scene, undercutting the Perodua Myvi along the way, buyers now have a compelling alternative. So is the 2010 Perodua Myvi worth the extra money? We would think so, mainly because the Perodua Myvi provides a more agile drive and better build quality overall.

Equipment

The base SR version gets door visor, side mirrors with turn signal, standard grade fabric seat material, two-speaker radio CD player with MP3/WMA, tilt steering, central locking, power windows and immobiliser. More expensive versions get front fog lamps, UV protected glass, rear spoiler, 14" alloy wheels, high grade fabric seat material, electric side mirrors, USB and Bluetooth, four speakers, integrated seat height adjuster, reverse sensor, dual SRS airbags, and ABS with EBD and BA. The SE versions add bodykit, leather upholstery and non-integrated 2-DIN radio CD player among others.

Environment

The 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre are not the most efficient engines. But in absolute terms, the 2010 Perodua Myvi, with its small engines and light-weight, is kinder to the planet than many other cars out there. “Green” folks should also opt for the manual transmission which will lower the carbon dioxide emission level.
