Styling
The Mazda5's styling is not outstanding relative to competing mid-size MPVs such as the Honda Stream and Toyota Wish. But we dare say none of the MPVs, in Malaysia at least, are likely to set much pulses racing. Overall though, the 2010 Mazda5 looks clean and neat, although the rear end design is a little fussy.
Handling
In line with the Mazda Zoom-Zoom driving experience, the 2010 Mazda5 impresses on the roads. The agile chassis, firm grip and good body control would not be complete without the sharp, suitably light steering, which means the 2010 Mazda5 is as easy to drive in the city as through bends.
Comfort
The ride can be harsh over rough surfaces and bouncy on highways, but refinement-wise, there is little wind and road noise intrusion into the cabin. Drivers will have minimal problems getting comfortable with the tilt, telescopic steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat. The instrument panel and dash centre display information clearly, while controls are simple to operate.
Quality + Reliability
The cabin materials feel robust and fit-and-finish are completed to the high standard expected from a Mazda. According to recent JD Power customer satisfaction surveys, Mazda has consistently taken the top few spots in terms of reliability. And we expect the 2010 Mazda5 to maintain that impressive record.
Performance
Only one 2.0-litre engine with 136 bhp and 175 Nm is available. Through a five-speed automatic transmission, the 2.0-litre engine delivers sufficient urge to carry seven occupants with pace. Be ready for some hoarse engine note if you wish to stay near the rev-limit, however.
Roominess
The front two and middle two occupants can sit in comfort, but the centre seat in the middle row and two seats in the last row are relatively small and uncomfortable. Boot space is modest with all seats up, but middle row seats can slide and double-fold, while last row seats can 50:50 split-fold. The electric sliding rear doors are highly useful in tight areas.
Running Costs
The 2.0-litre engine has reasonable fuel economy, returning 12.2 km/litre. Mazda5 owners should however be prepared for higher servicing costs and steeper depreciation than for the class-leading Honda Stream and Toyota Wish.
Value for Money
The 2010 Mazda5 provides a good equipment list and a sharp drive not many MPVs even come close to offering. But its cabin is not as roomy or versatile as those found in the Honda Stream, Toyota Wish and other rivals. Ride comfort also lags the class. In short, the best-driving MPV out there, but not the best for big families and long trips.
Equipment
The 2010 Mazda5 gets 16-inch alloy wheels, auto light system, fog lamps, electric sliding rear doors, electric folding exterior mirrors, rear roof spoiler, electric glass sunroof, leather steering wheel, steering wheel mounted audio controls, power windows, and CD-player with four-speaker audio system. Safety equipment includes Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), driver and passenger front airbags, front safety belts pretensioners and immobiliser.
Environment
Mazda has improved the fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions of the 2.0-litre engine, allowing the 2010 Mazda5 to close the gap with the Honda Stream and Toyota Wish in environmental awareness.
