2010 Jaguar XJ at a glance

Look beyond the old-fashioned styling, and you will find the 2010 Jaguar XJ to be a thoroughly competent luxury sedan that is refined and roomy. Crucial in this segment is desirability—something the 2010 Jaguar XJ has in short supply.

Styling

Styling has to be the 2010 Jaguar XJ's weakest point. While rival brands have moved the game on, introducing modern, stylish cars with attention-grabbing road presence, the 2010 Jaguar XJ seems to be stuck behind in time. The Jaguar XJ was most recently facelifted in 2007, although most of the changes are barely noticeable. The old-fashioned exterior is unfortunately complemented by an equally dated interior.

Handling

In line with Jaguar's core values, the 2010 Jaguar XJ focuses more on ride comfort than outright handling. Even so, the Jaguar XJ takes on winding roads with surprising composure, and features comfort and sports suspension settings, the latter of which sharpens up the car's responses for a sportier drive. Both the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class handle better, but the 2010 Jaguar XJ's superb steering, good body control and high grip levels are still commendable for such a large luxury sedan.

Comfort

The 2010 Jaguar XJ rides comfortably over urban roads and highways alike. Wind and road noise are largely kept out of the cabin while cruising. The engines are more audible than in, say, the Lexus LS, but all of them sound cultured. There are plenty of steering column and seating adjustments for drivers of all sizes. The all-round visibility is decent and the seats are supportive. And while most of the centre console controls are clearly labelled, the stereo buttons are set too low for easy reach.

Quality + Reliability

The cabin design may be out of touch, but the build and material quality is up there with the best. Materials, may it be the wood, leather or plastics, are excellent in quality. The fit-and-finish are faultless, and all switchgear works with a solid feel. That said, the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class cabins exude a sense of class less palpable in the 2010 Jaguar XJ. Jaguar's reputation for mechanical reliability has improved by leaps and bounds however, and the 2010 Jaguar XJ should present little problems of any kind.

Performance

The 2010 Jaguar XJ may look old-fashioned on the outside, but its body benefits from lightweight aluminium construction, shaving off substantial weight which allows the otherwise under-powered 3.0-litre V6 engine to put in a decently rapid performance. It is the supercharged 4.2-litre V8 engine that steals the show, however, with 400 bhp, a cultured soundtrack and silky smoothness. With quick reactions and barely detectable gear-changes, the standard six-speed automatic transmission is impressive, too.

Roominess

As expected of a car in this large luxury segment, interior room is generous for both front and rear occupants. The standard wheelbase Jaguar XJ already offers more than adequate rear legroom, but the long wheelbase Jaguar XJ provides acres of rear room. The 470-litre boot is relatively small by class standards, and wheel-arch intrusion makes loading of wider items all but impossible.

Running Costs

The lightweight body helps in fuel economy, but neither the 3.0-litre V6 engine nor the supercharged 4.2-litre V8 engine are likely to be cheap to run. Servicing and repairs are expensive. To make things worse, the Jaguar XJ will not be able to retain values remotely as well as the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Value for Money

The 2010 Jaguar XJ is very expensive, as are the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and other full-size luxury sedans. Which is why automakers not only have to produce thoroughly competent cars; they need to make their cars desirable—something that Jaguar has not been doing well until the Jaguar XF showed up. The 2010 Jaguar XJ looks like a Jaguar of the past, and while it might be more high-tech and competent than it looks, German rivals are more complete and far more desirable.

Equipment

Standard equipment level is high with creature comforts such as leather upholstery, high-end audio system, climate control, electrically adjustable front seats, steering wheel and side mirrors, rain sensing wipers, parking sensors and cruise control. Safety kit is similarly generous, with a full set of airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and electronic stability programme among others.

Environment

Few full-size luxury sedans can call themselves “green”, and the 2010 Jaguar XJ is no exception. The lightweight body helps in fuel economy, but the engines lack fuel-efficiency enhancing features found on Audi and BMW engines.
