2010 Citroen C6 at a glance

The 2010 Citroen C6 exceeds expectations with its unique looks and roomy interior. Up against established rivals, and with its optimistic pricing, the 2010 Citroen C6 will need to be a much stronger package, not least with the Citroen branding.

Styling

They say French cars are quirky. You just need to look at Citroen's model range to confirm that. The 2010 Citroen C6's striking front is dominated by the double-chevron grille. While the curvaceous lines and frameless doors create a sleek side profile, where the Citroen C6 looks the best from. At the rear, the concave rear window is flanked by eye-catching rear lights. The 2010 Citroen C6 is certainly going to get you noticed, especially when it looks like nothing else on the roads.

Handling

Drive the 2010 Citroen C6 and it is not hard to know it caters for comfort than handling. To be fair, the Citroen C6 corners with confidence, especially for its large size. But the ultra-light steering lacks in feel, and body movements are tainted by significant body roll, although grip levels are quite high. This car is meant for the long, open roads, not any twisty, two-lane roads. With four curvy corners, parking the car is a constant nightmare. Lucky for us, parking sensors were invented to save the day.

Comfort

The active hydraulic suspension keeps the 2010 Citroen C6 level regardless of load, but the ride quality falls short of the famed Citroen "magic carpet". Around city areas, the Citroen C6 can be unsettled by rougher roads, but at higher speeds on highways, the ride is superbly smooth. While refinement is generally good with minimal wind and engine noise, road noise intrudes when tackling bumps and potholes. The multitude of adjustments and cosseting seats make for comfortable long-distance cruising. But the fussy-looking dashboard is as confusing to look at as it is to use.

Quality + Reliability

The interior quality standard represents a massive jump from older Citroen models. But positioned against luxury rivals like the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the 2010 Citroen C6 must at least have comparable quality. Premium materials are used, with sufficient attention to assembly. But overall some cabin plastics and switchgear betray the Citroen C6's aspiration. The 3.0-litre engine has been proven over the years, although the rest of the car including the sophisticated suspension will need to prove itself.

Performance

Over the years, the 3.0-litre V6 engine has been worked and reworked to keep up with the times. Producing 215 bhp and 290 Nm, the engine pulls strongly for a capable and refined on-road performance, even producing an entertaining V6 soundtrack when pushed hard. The six-speed adaptive automatic transmission comes with four shifting modes (Full auto shifting, Sports, Winter and Manual sequential shifting). Over time, the transmission will adapt the shifting pattern to the owner's driving style for smoother shifts.

Roominess

Most likely the luxury sedan to ferry French VIPs around, the 2010 Citroen C6 has ample room for front and rear passengers. That said, the rear is only generous in space for two, and decent in space for three. In addition, the roofline slightly compromises the rear headroom, although that only affects really tall people. Boot size is decent by class standards.

Running Costs

Fuel economy is average by segment standards. Maintenance costs could be higher than competition's with, thus far, limited spare parts on the market. Road tax costs around RM 2K, while insurance will cost significantly more due to the 2010 Citroen C6's hefty price tag. Depreciation is probably the biggest question mark that is not helped by the Citroen brand name, limited spare parts availability or the high price tag.

Value for Money

The 2010 Citroen C6 is asking for money that can get you the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. But against these established and extremely capable rivals, the Citroen C6 is found wanting in all aspects, except for its rarity and quirkiness. Overall, the 2010 Citroen C6 has improved significantly over its predecessor, but it still needs some work to compete at this level, especially with regards to the Citroen branding, and it would not hurt to lower the price.

Equipment

The substantial equipment list includes xenon headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, active suspension, head-up display, speed-dependent automatic rear deflector, Citroen NaviDrive system, lane departure warning system and Hydractive III+ suspension system. Safety kit includes electronic stability program with traction control, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency braking assistance, and a number of airbags (dual front, driver-knee, front lateral, and front, rear curtain).

Environment

The V6 emits 266 g/km of carbon dioxide, which is a below-par figure for its 3.0-litre engine capacity. Against class-leaders from BMW and Audi that feature the latest clean, green technologies, the 2010 Citroen C6's environmental-unfriendliness is more than obvious.

Live Life Drive Verdict

Refreshingly unique
Roomy interior
Fine V6 engine
Some disappointing cabin parts
Hefty price tag
Ride and refinement below expectations
