Styling
BMW's design language has received much criticisms ever since the introduction of the 7-Series; the barrage not subsiding with subsequent cars like the 5-Series and even the 3-Series. That may be mainly due to the unsuitable fitting of a radical design on more mainstream vehicles. Whereas for the BMW 6-Series, the radical design language fits its sporty nature well. The front end looks 'shark-like', flanked by low-slung, sporty lines to produce a sleek side profile. Unmistakable road presence from the 2010 BMW 6-Series will turn heads wherever you go.
Handling
The 2010 BMW 6-Series handles more like a sporty grand tourer than an outright sports coupe. While the BMW 5-Series sits comfortably atop its class with regards to handling, any lucky BMW 6-Series owners get to enjoy an even more agile version of the 5-Series's chassis. Drive leisurely and the 2010 BMW 6-Series serves up excellent cruising ability with high-speed stability; up the tempo and you get superb handling with considerable grip levels and wonderfully accurate steering. There are two different but equally capable sides to the BMW 6-Series's repertoire.
Comfort
Even with 19-inch wheels and run-flat tyres, the 2010 BMW 6-Series rides well. Road and wind noise is generally well-insulated at all speeds, but the large wheels generate some tyre noise. The engine note sounds more entertaining than annoying. Drivers can choose from a multitude of adjustments for the steering wheel and supportive seats to find that perfect driving position. But maneuvering the car in tight city areas might be more of a problem, and the finicky iDrive controller is not the easiest to use.
Quality + Reliability
As with the BMW 5-Series on which it is based, the 2010 BMW 6-Series's cabin is beautifully designed and solidly put together. Cabin materials and fit-and-finish are top-notch, while the logically-placed controls provide for good ergonomics. The shared switchgear with the 5-Series means ultimately a Maserati or Jaguar would feel more special inside. Conversely, the shared switchgear and running gear should uphold BMW's reputation for reliability.
Performance
Only one engine is available: the powerful in-line six-cylinder 3.0-litre with 272 bhp and 315 Nm of torque. This is the same engine in the 530i that we think is the best value for the money. The engine is refined, ever-ready-to-rev, and has ample torque at the low-mid range; the 630i performs outstandingly and almost effortlessly as a result, clocking the 0-100 km/h sprint in only 6.6 seconds. The six-speed automatic transmission with Sports mode and gearshift paddles is smooth throughout.
Roominess
While considered a two-plus-two, the 2010 BMW 6-Series's low-slung cabin design inhibits interior room, reducing the rear room to just being large enough for kids or bags. Adults, even those of smaller sizes, will find it tough getting comfortable behind. The front two enjoy plenty of head- and leg-room, but some of us found the cabin to be slightly claustrophobic. The boot does better with 450 litres of loading space, accommodating two golf sets with space to spare.
Running Costs
With the latest direct injection technology, the 630i has excellent fuel economy by segment standards. Maintenance will be costly, but typically long service intervals and proven reliability should help. Road tax costs RM 2120, but insurance will be significantly more due to the high price tag. Coupes rarely hold their values as well as sedans, and with the 630i's high price, steep depreciation is an unwelcome but real prospect.
Value for Money
There are many capable rivals in this segment, such as the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, Maserati Coupe, Jaguar XK Coupe and Porsche 911. All are formidable but also more expensive relative to the 2010 BMW 6-Series. There is little doubt that the 2010 BMW 6-Series possesses great assets, but in face of such alternatives, we have to question the desirability factor. And, ultimately, we find legendary brands like Porsche, Maserati and Jaguar just too hard to pass by.
Equipment
The 630i gets the Individual package with exclusive combinations of colours and trims for that individual style. 19-inch alloy wheels, run-flat tyres, cruise control, Park Distance Control (PDC), foglights, rain sensors, adaptive xenon headlights, automatic climate control, leather steering wheel, glass roof, iDrive controller, colour monitor, and stereo with six-CD changer and MP3 decoder are standard. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which comprises anti-lock braking system, brake assist and traction control, and airbags are standard.
Environment
BMW's latest direct injection technology goes a long way in saving the environment. The 3.0-litre engine outperforms comparable rivalling engines in terms of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The 3.0-litre engine's 184 grams/km of emissions is impressive, and if you consider what rivals in this segment are emitting, that number becomes astounding.
