Styling
BMW's styling is perhaps the only aspect that critics can find fault with. The BMW design language is consistently implemented throughout its whole model range. After a facelift, the 2011 BMW 3-Series looks sharper than before. To us, we are neutral on the exterior styling, but bitter rival Mercedes-Benz C-Class seems to win this round. The interior styling is more to our liking, with a clean, modern design.
Handling
With 50:50 weight distribution and rear-wheel drive, the 2011 BMW 3-Series is the undisputed driver's car, although the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is uncomfortably close behind. The 2011 BMW 3-Series steers and corners with unmatched precision thanks to its sublime chassis. Grip levels are relentless and body control is terrific. When coupled with the sharp steering, there is little doubt how the BMW 3-Series conquers corners and bends with ease. In short, fantastic to drive.
Comfort
The 2011 BMW 3-Series strikes a fine balance between handling and ride comfort. Rough surfaces and small bumps are conveyed via the slightly firm suspension, especially in city areas, but the ride is never uncomfortable. Add excellent noise insulation and the 2011 BMW 3-Series becomes an adept highway cruiser. The wide range of adjustments for steering wheel and seats easily allows drivers to find an ideal position. Controls are straight-forward to operate; even the iDrive controller has become more user-friendly with shortcut buttons.
Quality + Reliability
The 2011 BMW 3-Series's cabin is classy and modern. High premium standards can be seen in the top-quality dashboard materials, as well as the panels' fit-and-finish. The 3-Series is one of BMW's key model, and that fact is highlighted by the solid construction throughout the car. Long-time rival brand, Audi has established its reputation through their wonderful cabins, and the Audi A4 still beats the 2011 BMW 3-Series in interior ambience and design. BMW models have a good reliability record, and the BMW 3-Series should be no different.
Performance
A total of three engines are available: 2.0-litre with 156 bhp, 2.5-litre with 218 bhp, and the venerable twin-turbo 3.0-litre with 306 bhp. The 2.0-litre has to be worked hard if you want any real thrust. BMW's famed in-line six-cylinder technology is available in the 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre. The 2.5-litre provides strong acceleration and effortless cruising. But it is the twin-turbo 3.0-litre that stole the show with colossal performance delivered with mechanical sophistication. All engines are paired with six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic.
Roominess
The 2011 BMW 3-Series has more than adequate room for passengers and luggage alike. It is worth mentioning that this present car has much improved space relative to older BMW 3-Series generations. Front two enjoy plenty of head- and leg-room, while those at the back get similar treatment, except for people over 1.8 metres who will find rear headroom to be limited. Boot size is among the best in the class, although the shape can be more useful. However, with bigger dimensions, the Audi A4 remains the leader in spaciousness.
Running Costs
Efficient Dynamics technology enables the 2011 BMW 3-Series to lead the class with its excellent fuel economy. Servicing and repairs are expensive, but typically long service intervals and good reliability should help. Road tax costs from RM 377.50, to RM 877 and RM 2,077.50, but insurance will be more punishing to the wallet due to the high prices. The highly desirable BMW 3-Series has good residuals in the second-hand market.
Value for Money
The pricing for the Audi A4 starts at RM 235,000, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class starts at RM 255,888, while the 2011 BMW 3-Series starts at RM 236,800. No matter how you look at the BMW 3-Series's overall package, there is plenty of value for the money. The BMW leads the class in handling and performance, and is comparable to its two bitter rivals in all other areas. For us, the 2011 BMW 3-Series is therefore highly recommended.
Equipment
320i gets 17-inch alloy wheels, run-flat tyres, cruise control, Park Distance Control (PDC), foglights, rain sensors, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, sports leather steering wheel, plus stereo with MP3 decoder. More expensive models add 18-inch alloy wheels, M aerodynamics package, different trims, and iDrive controller among others. 335i gets the Individual package with more customisations. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which includes anti-lock braking system and traction control, plus airbags are standard.
Environment
In addition to improved fuel economy, Efficient Dynamics technology entails a series of energy-saving measures that limit environmental pollution. Any of the three engines will better comparable engines in terms of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. BMW is providing more driving pleasure with less emissions, something other automakers should emulate.
