The 2011 Skoda Superb lives up to its name in being superb. The pricing is on the high side and there is no familiar badge worn, but the 2011 Skoda Superb offers plenty to make up for that, leading the class in more areas than one.

Styling

Like its predecessor, the Skoda Superb is styled with its mass market target audience in mind—conservatively, that is. But there is now a sleeker appearance and a greater sense of elegance. The classy cabin further affirms that perception. The 2011 Skoda Superb is not instantly stunning, but the subtly handsome styling, outside and inside, will grow on you.

Handling

For a car this size and weight, the 2011 Skoda Superb is commendably composed and competent. The tightly controlled body movements, surprising agility and good grip levels are matched by a weighty, direct steering that provides plenty of feel, making the 2011 Skoda Superb one of the best to drive by class standards.

Comfort

The ride is well-damped, proving very settled on the highway and supple over rough surfaces. Cabin refinement is largely excellent, as engine, road and wind noise are well kept out. The cabin is one of the best we have seen in a car of this class. Dashboard controls are clearly labelled and simple to use. Seat-height and two-way steering adjustments ensure that driving controls fall nicely within reach for drivers of all shapes and sizes.

Quality + Reliability

Being associated with Volkswagen has its perks as the 2011 Skoda Superb's cabin shows. From the cabin design to the build quality and to the materials used, the 2011 Skoda Superb matches if not exceeds what class-leaders are offering. The fit-and-finish are impressive, while soft-touch materials feature prominently, especially on areas with high frequency of contact. Skoda is not well-known in Malaysia, but it is elsewhere. Under Volkswagen's watchful guidance, Skoda has revamped itself with a series of mechanically dependable models including the Superb.

Performance

The 2011 Skoda Superb's drivetrain consists of a turbocharged 2.0-litre FSI engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. With 197 bhp and 280 Nm of torque from 1800 - 5000 rpm, the engine is not only strong, but refined and highly flexible as well. Credit also to the six-speed automatic for shifting smoothly and always finding the right ratio under all situations.

Roominess

Exceptionally roomy for five occupants and their luggage, the 2011 Skoda Superb can lay claim to being the roomiest by class standards—no small feat when there are rivals such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The huge 565-litre boot can be extended to an impressive 1670 litres of loading space via the split-fold rear seats. On top of that, there is the option of either opening only the bootlid or the entire tailgate, allowing the 2011 Skoda Superb to perform as a hatchback or sedan depending on your preference and need.

Running Costs

Benefiting from FSI and turbocharging, the engine can be considered efficient to run for the performance on tap. If driven with consideration, the 2011 Skoda Superb should be reasonable to run. Servicing and repairs should be affordable, too. Depreciation is the biggest concern, though: the Skoda brand is far from established or desirable in Malaysia, which makes maintaining strong resale values hard, however an excellent car the 2011 Skoda Superb really is.

Value for Money

It is a little surprising, but the 2011 Skoda Superb lives up to its name in more areas than one. In fact, other than the subjective area of styling, the potentially high depreciation due to the lacklustre Skoda badge, and a pricing on the high side, the 2011 Skoda Superb actually makes a compelling case, even against the supposed big guns such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Volkswagen's influence clearly transformed Skoda, and its flagship Superb sedan stands testament to that.

Equipment

Standard equipments include alloy wheels, electric windows, electrically adjustable and foldable door mirrors, 6-disc CD/MP3/radio audio system, parking sensors, cruise control, leather upholstery, dual zone climate control, electric seats and remote central locking. Safety kit includes a multitude of airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), traction control and electronic stability programme.

Environment

Thanks to modern technologies like FSI and turbocharging, the engine can be considered frugal and clean for the performance available on tap. However, rivals such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are locally assembled, which would cause less pollution than the 2011 Skoda Superb which is shipped a long distance onto our shores.
