Styling
The 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe is styled like no other cars on the roads, and the distinctive design ought to win plenty of head-turns. But Porsche variants are hard to tell apart, especially hard when the previous generation 911 and the current 911 look so similar. While the 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe will not win any awards for originality, the styling has evolved nicely and should win more fans than critics.
Handling
How a rear-engined car became one of the greatest driver's cars is quite astonishing. We should be thankful because the current Porsche 911 Coupe handles even better than its capable predecessors, combining incredible grip levels and splendid body control with breakneck agility. And of course, the sublime steering is perfectly-weighted, full-of-feedback and precise.
Comfort
The 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe is not the most comfortable-riding car around with its firm suspension. Targa variants are tuned to be softer-riding, and on the other hand, the track-ready GT2 rides too firmly for road use. Cruising is highly stable, but the cabin is hardly quiet, in a good way. Wind and road noise are noticeable, but the great engine soundtrack dominates. Driver enjoys a perfect driving position, supportive seats and comprehensive steering and seating adjustments. But the many small buttons on the centre console can be a chore to use.
Quality + Reliability
The 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe is a very expensive car, and the classy cabin reflects the price tag. Build quality is superb, while materials used are premium and soft-feeling. However, the high quality cabin does not feel overtly luxurious like in a Bentley, let down by a bland dash design. Porsche holds a brilliant reputation for mechanical reliability, and the 911 Coupe should withstand long-term high-speed action with little problems.
Performance
The 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe variants offer performances ranging from massively quick to stunning fast. The Carrera and Targa use a 3.6-litre with 341 bhp, while the Carrera S and Targa S use a 3.8-litre with 380 bhp. The Carrera can choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, but the Targa only comes with four-wheel drive. Not fast (and expensive) enough? Try the four-wheel-driven Turbo using a 3.6-litre with 473 bhp or the range-topping, rear-wheel-driven GT2 using a 3.6-litre with 523 bhp. Unlike the Tiptronic gearbox, the seven-speed PDK is an exceptional alternative to the six-speed manual.
Roominess
The 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe may have four seats, but the rear two are next to useless. Front driver and passenger enjoy excellent head- and leg-room, but the rear seats are barely capable of carrying children, let alone adults. The engine is sited at the rear, so the boot is at the front. The loading space is however small and access to the space is awkward. Storage compartments are plentiful throughout the cabin, at least.
Running Costs
Running costs are high, as expected of a supercar. But credit to Porsche for giving the 911 Coupe good fuel economy, by supercar standards. Servicing and repairs are expensive, but depreciation should be kept in check nicely, thanks to the strong Porsche brand and even stronger 911 reputation.
Value for Money
Even the cheapest 911 Carrera costs an astounding amount of money, not to mention the GT2 which doubles the price. While most Malaysians will not get a chance to buy a Porsche 911 Coupe, those who can should know that the high price tag gets them an icon, one which has constantly redefined the boundaries of handling dynamics. There is a growing number of capable alternatives to the 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe, some of which are cheaper, but the 911 Coupe will always remain one of the greatest driver's cars.
Equipment
The price you pay really goes to the mechanics such as the engine and chassis, but basic luxury equipments such as climate control, alloy wheels, premium audio system, remote central locking, electric windows and leather upholstery are standard. Plenty more (expensive) goodies are available on the option list. Safety equipments include six airbags and Porsche Stability Management (PSM), which controls a number of safety programs to prevent accidents in the first place.
Environment
Fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, although high, are much less compared to other supercars. But if you constantly push the car to the limit, the numbers will worsen considerably. Only two can be seated also means there is more pollution per occupant. Greenpeace activists can however seek consolation from the fact that the 2011 Porsche 911 Coupe is rarely used as an everyday car.
