Styling
The 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet is styled like no other cars on the roads, and the distinctive design ought to win plenty of head-turns. But Porsche variants are hard to tell apart, especially hard when the previous generation 911 and the current 911 look so similar. While the Porsche 911 Cabriolet will not win any awards for originality, the styling has evolved nicely and should win more fans than critics. With the top down, the 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet looks even better.
Handling
How a rear-engined car became one of the greatest driver's cars is quite astonishing. We found the Porsche 911 Coupe to handle even better than its capable predecessors, and the Porsche 911 Cabriolet is not much different. The ride-and-handling balance is tilted more towards comfort with the softer suspension. But the handling is still jaw-dropping, combining incredible grip levels with splendid body control and extreme agility. And of course, the sublime steering remains perfectly-weighted, full-of-feedback and precise.
Comfort
As mentioned, the 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet uses softer suspension, providing a more comfortable ride over bumps and lumps. Cruising is highly stable, but the use of a fabric roof allows quite some wind and road noise into the cabin when the roof is up, but it never gets overwhelming. That will hardly matter as you will be paying attention to the great engine soundtrack. Driver enjoys a perfect driving position, supportive seats and comprehensive steering and seating adjustments. But the many small buttons on the centre console can be a chore to use.
Quality + Reliability
The 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet is very expensive, and the classy cabin reflects the price tag. Build quality is superb, while materials used are premium and soft-feeling. However, the high quality cabin does not feel overtly luxurious like in a Bentley, let down by a bland dash design. Porsche holds a brilliant reputation for mechanical reliability, and the 911 Cabriolet should withstand long-term hard-driving with little problems.
Performance
The 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet variants offer performances ranging from massively quick to stunning fast. The Carrera uses a 3.6-litre with 341 bhp, while the Carrera S uses a 3.8-litre with 380 bhp. Either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is available. The range-topping, four-wheel-driven Turbo comes equipped with a 3.6-litre producing 473 bhp. Unlike the Tiptronic gearbox, the seven-speed PDK is an exceptional alternative to the six-speed manual.
Roominess
The 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet may have four seats, but the rear two are next to useless. Front driver and passenger enjoy excellent head- and leg-room, but the rear seats are barely capable of carrying children, let alone adults. The engine is sited at the rear, so the boot has to be at the front. The loading space is however small and access to the space is awkward. Storage compartments are plentiful throughout the cabin, at least.
Running Costs
Running costs are high, as expected of a supercar. But credit to Porsche for giving the 911 Cabriolet good fuel economy, by supercar standards. Servicing and repairs are expensive, but depreciation should be kept in check nicely, thanks to the strong Porsche brand and even stronger 911 reputation.
Value for Money
Whether it is the Porsche 911 Carrera or 911 Turbo, the prices are sky high, and cabriolet variants only add to the price tag. The high price tag however gets you an icon, one which has constantly redefined the boundaries of handling dynamics. There is a growing number of capable alternatives to the Porsche 911, some of which are cheaper, but the 911 will always remain one of the greatest driver's cars. And the 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet offers the chance to enjoy the astounding performance top-down, wind in your hair.
Equipment
The price you pay really goes to the mechanics such as the engine and chassis, but basic luxury equipments such as climate control, alloy wheels, premium audio system, remote central locking, electric windows and leather upholstery are standard. Plenty more (expensive) goodies are available on the option list. Safety equipments include six airbags and Porsche Stability Management (PSM), which controls a number of safety programs to prevent accidents in the first place. Two spring-loaded roll-over bars behind the rear seats are deployed if a roll-over occurs.
Environment
Fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, although high, are much less compared to other supercars'. But if you constantly push the car to the limit, the numbers will worsen considerably. Only two can be seated also means there is more pollution per occupant. Greenpeace activists can however seek consolation from the fact that the 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet is rarely used as an everyday car.
