Styling
Easily the most stylish truck out there, the Mitsubishi Triton heralded in the idea that trucks can be about more than utility. Who knows how many sedan drivers have been converted to truck lovers because of the Mitsubishi Triton's cool style, present on the outside and inside. The 2011 Mitsubishi Triton Lite however makes do with a lower height, smaller wheels and black bumper that reduce the cool factor by a margin.
Handling
Safe and predictable on-road handling, but the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton still drives like a truck, meaning modest grip levels and considerable body lean are constant companions. The steering is slow and poor on feedback. Modern sedans and road-biased SUVs have the edge in this aspect. Off-road handling benefits from the four-wheel drive, which the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton Lite does without.
Comfort
The 2011 Mitsubishi Triton's soft suspension deals with urban road scars well, but the ride can get bouncy if bumps are approached at speed. Highway cruising is smooth and more refined than for many other trucks, keeping road, wind and engine noise in the background. Driver sits high and enjoys height-adjustable seating plus tilt-adjustable steering column. The stylish cabin is also ergonomical, except for the small stereo buttons. The seats can be more supportive, too.
Quality + Reliability
Tough construction, solid assembly, nice finishing and durable yet appealing cabin materials are sure signs why the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton boasts the best cabin among trucks. Cabin quality is one area where the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton trumps other trucks and rivals certain sedans. Mitsubishi has an outstanding reputation for mechanical reliability, and the Triton should pose little problems for owners.
Performance
Along with the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic are three diesel engines up for selection: 2.5-litre turbodiesel with 134 bhp and 314 Nm; 3.2-litre turbodiesel with 158 bhp and 343 Nm; and the 8-valve SOHC 2.5-litre without turbocharger has 74 bhp and 149 Nm. The 74 bhp 2.5-litre struggles to find any real grunt to haul the Triton Lite's heft. The 134 bhp 2.5-litre gives the Triton respectable urge, and gets our vote over the 3.2-litre, which does not provide enough power increase to justify the higher price tag. The 134 bhp 2.5-litre is also the most refined among the three engines.
Roominess
Front driver and passenger sit comfortably with ample room. The rear has decent head- and leg-room, accommodating two in good comfort and three at the expense of shoulder room. Being a truck, the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton comes with a loading bay that is large and practical for cargo carrying.
Running Costs
The 2011 Mitsubishi Triton is on-par with most trucks in terms of fuel consumption. Between the three engines, the 2.5-litre turbodiesel offers the best compromise between performance and fuel intake. Servicing costs should be reasonable and resale values competitive as well, even if the Toyota badge should give the Hilux an advantage.
Value for Money
The strongest asset the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton possesses has to be its style and cool truck factor. The stylish exterior is matched by a sedan-like interior. The decent comfort and refinement, solid cabin quality, strong engine performance and good equipments are further reasons why the Mitsubishi Triton can and will convert many more from sedan drivers to truck lovers. The 2011 Mitsubishi Triton Lite goes for an affordable price with a still reasonable equipment list, but with less grunt and refinement.
Equipment
The 2011 Mitsubishi Triton Lite comes with 1-Din AM/FM/CD player, air-conditioning, alarm system, power windows, electric door mirrors, reverse sensor, 15" alloy wheels, sports bar and bedliner, but misses out on the rev-counter. The Triton 2.5 adds dual SRS airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), 1-Din AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA player with 6-speaker system, leather steering wheel, digital RV meter, front fog lamps and 16" alloy wheels. The Triton 3.2 further adds automatic air-conditioning and window visor.
Environment
Just because the carbon dioxide emissions and fuel economy are better than for SUVs does not automatically make the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton “green”. In absolute terms, the numbers still leave much to be desired. Environmentalists should stick to small, light city cars.
Live Life Drive Verdict
