2011 Mazda RX-8 at a glance

As much a technical showcase of rotary engine technology as it is a wonderful sports car, the 2011 Mazda RX-8 ticks mostly the right boxes, even wearing a price tag that undercuts all rivals'. So, what's not to like?

Styling

A few of us might love how the 2011 Mazda RX-8 looks. But most of us would wonder how Mazda designers actually came up with such a quirky, unique design. For sure, the flared wheel-arches, the bodykit and large alloys make no pretensions about the 2011 Mazda RX-8's sporty intent. But there is no way we are lusting for one because of how it looks.

Handling

To address the RX-8's previous flaws, Mazda stiffened the body and suspension, and sharpened up the steering. Drive the 2011 Mazda RX-8 over a series of bends and you immediately realise its talent. The body control is truly impressive, and the 2011 Mazda RX-8 will just grip on, no matter how fast you enter that tight corner. The chassis is very responsive, too, as the car follows your steering commands almost instantly. This is a sports car that does not do mundane commuting well, but one that comes alive given a stretch of twisty roads.

Comfort

Mazda managed to balance the ride-and-handling nicely. The low-speed ride is firm but not overly so, and ride comfort improves with speed. The 2011 Mazda RX-8 makes a good long-distance cruiser, with wind, road and engine noise kept in the background. The driving position is flawed, however, with the pedals too close and the steering wheel too far from the driver. Not so good, then, that the steering only adjusts for height, although seat-height adjustments are available. Like for all Mazdas, all controls are logically placed and clearly labelled for optimal use.

Quality + Reliability

Being a Mazda, the RX-8 brings excellent build quality along with generally quality materials. The instruments look classy, controls work with precision and the fit-and-finish have been completed with care. Other than some areas which could have used softer, denser plastics, Mazda has done a great job with the 2011 Mazda RX-8's cabin. The rotary engine and other mechanicals should pose little problems, too, as the Mazda RX-8 has been in production for a number of years now.

Performance

Mazda is the only automaker to use a rotary engine. And what an engine it is. Paired to a sweet six-speed manual gearbox, the 1.3-litre engine produces 212 bhp at 7500 rpm and 211 Nm at 5500 rpm, putting in a strong, refined on-road performance. Low-to-mid range torque is lacking; this engine strives on revs, and emits a highly distinctive, pleasing engine note while unleashing its power.

Roominess

The 2011 Mazda RX-8 is actually a four-door, four-seater coupe, with unhindered access to a pair of individual rear seats that can accommodate two adults with ease. Front and rear room are not lacking, but the rear can feel claustrophobic considering the limited view out. The reverse-hinged rear doors are easy to operate, and the boot can take in a couple of suitcases, too.

Running Costs

The official 8.6 km/litre fuel economy is already not great, but the real-world consumption is likely to be even higher with all the high-revving action that would be taking place. Servicing and repair costs should be manageable, however, and depreciation should be less of a concern for the RX-8 compared to other Mazdas. There is a good constant demand for Mazda RX-8s in Malaysia, so we expect residual values to hold up quite well.

Value for Money

The highlight of the 2011 Mazda RX-8 is undoubtedly its creamy smooth engine which you will find hard to resist revving hard all the time. Then, there is the impressive handling which complements the performance well. For such a sporty car, the ride is compliant and the cabin reasonably practical. The driving position is flawed, however, and of course fuel stops are going to be frequent. Overall, though, Mazda has produced a wonderful sports car with a price tag that undercuts all rivals'. So, what's not to like?

Equipment

Standard equipment on the 2011 Mazda RX-8 includes 18" alloy wheels, leather trim, cruise control, climate control, electrically adjustable side mirrors, remote central locking and a radio/CD/MP3 audio system. Safety kit includes twin front, side and curtain airbags, as well as stability, traction and braking controls.

Environment

The 8.6 km/litre fuel economy is matched by the 304 grams/km carbon dioxide emissions, ranking the 2011 Mazda RX-8 as one of the worst-polluting cars on our roads, and any other road for that matter. The 2011 Mazda RX-8 is thirsty and polluting by class standards, making certain rivals such as the Audi TT and BMW Z4 appear “green” by comparison.

Live Life Drive Verdict

Rotary engine performance
Impressive handling
Reasonably practical cabin
Engine lacks torque
Flawed driving position
