Styling

Italian design firm Pininfarina created the vastly beautiful Maserati GranTurismo, which exudes elegance and sportiness in ampleness. The unmistakably Maserati grille features prominently, with fluid yet aggressive lines from the front to the end. The styling theme extends inside, producing a charming, special cabin few others can match.

Handling

The 2011 Maserati GranTurismo has fantastic dynamics to match the sporty exterior. With plenty of grip, excellent body control and sharp steering, the Maserati GranTurismo provides an enjoyable drive on the whole. However the 2011 Maserati GranTurismo feels big and less nimble than the best in the class, while the steering lacks feedback and can be overly light at speed.

Comfort

The sportiness comes at the expense of ride comfort. The firm ride struggles with bumps and rough roads, but is still smooth enough to be a grand tourer. Cabin refinement is generally good, but road and engine noise are noticeable at speed. A luxurious ambience plus plenty of electric steering and seating adjustments greet drivers. However the dash controls look busy, and front visibility suffers due to the thick A-pillars.

Quality + Reliability

Top-rate material quality and build quality are apparent the moment you step into the 2011 Maserati GranTurismo's plush cabin. Other than some cheap-looking minor controls, the cabin has taken strides forward in terms of quality. The Germans still have the edge, but Maserati is improving. Yet another pertinent issue is the reliability, which is not Maserati's strong suit. Time will tell, but we believe the mechanics should have improved like the rest of the car.

Performance

The 4.2-litre V8 churns out 405 bhp and 460 Nm, giving the 2011 Maserati GranTurismo a strong performance along with a magnificent engine soundtrack. If only there is more pull below 3000 rpm, which will make for a more flexible performance. A conventional six-speed automatic transmission is used in place of the jerky CambioCorsa automated manual, thereby allowing smoother shifting, although accelerating from rest can still be a jerky affair.

Roominess

The 2011 Maserati GranTurismo has genuine comfortable seating capacity for four, rivalling the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and Bentley Continental GT in the four-seater coupe segment. The boot capacity does less well though, with probably insufficient space for the luggage of the four occupants.

Running Costs

Fuel consumption of 7.0 km/litre is frankly abysmal. Servicing costs are very expensive, and although the famed Maserati badge will help the GranTurismo preserve its value decently well, the depreciation in absolute amount will be substantial given the high starting price.

Value for Money

The 2011 Maserati GranTurismo is expensive, just like the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and Bentley Continental GT. These coupes can carry four in comfort, when most rear seats in two-plus-two coupes are there merely for marketing purposes. Up against the opulent Mercedes and highly capable Bentley, the 2011 Maserati GranTurismo loses out in comfort and quality, but stands out with its Pininfarina styling and fantastic dynamics.

Equipment

As expected of a prestigious car like the 2011 Maserati GranTurismo, there is a multitude of upholstery and colours to choose from. The standard equipment list is extensive, with some expensive goodies in the option list. Safety kit includes six airbags, and traction and stability control.

Environment

Carbon dioxide emissions of 330 g/km and fuel economy of 7.0 km/litre are about as bad as it gets with regards to the environment. The only consolation for Greenpeace activists and the like?—the 2011 Maserati GranTurismo is so expensive and rare that few ever make it on to Malaysian roads.
