Styling

Land Rover has updated the 2011 Range Rover with a new grille, redesigned front bumper, bi-xenon headlights, and new power vents. These subtle changes refresh what has been a successful design of substantial road presence. Land Rover has evolved the iconic looks of the original Range Rover, rendering a contemporary yet imposing outward appearance.

Handling

Land Rover has become synonymous with outstanding off-roading, and the 2011 Range Rover carries on that tradition with abilities to match the reputation. But it is on the roads that the Range Rover has truly improved. The interlinked electronic air suspension gives excellent body control and ride quality. The 2011 Range Rover cushions occupants over rough surfaces, while cornering with decent enthusiasm. It is impressive how such a large, tall SUV can conquer muddy terrains, take on twisty roads, and yet provide a limousine ride.

Comfort

The classic Land Rover Command driving position seats the driver in an elevated position, with a clear view of all four vehicle corners and beyond. Drivers can get comfortable using the numerous steering column and seating adjustments. At cruising speeds, engine and road noise are effectively insulated from the cabin, although some wind noise is audible. Some controls are small, but overall ergonomics are good. The 2011 Range Rover has a superbly comfortable cabin that justifies its billings.

Quality + Reliability

For a car this price, expectations of the cabin quality are high. But the 2011 Range Rover does not disappoint. Putting together the finest materials with remarkable attention to details, Land Rover has created a quality cabin that matches any rivals'. Even the reliability concerns of old have been sorted out, with the Range Rover enjoying a positive reputation for reliability.

Performance

There is only one diesel engine for selection, which is an unique situation in Malaysia considering how usually only petrol engines are offered. The 3.6-litre TDV8 common-rail turbo-diesel engine is paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox with CommandShift, which adapts to driving style over time. Much improved over the previous 3.0-litre diesel, the new engine produces 275 bhp at 4000 rpm and 640 Nm at 2000 rpm. The massive torque at just 2000 rpm means the 2011 Range Rover rarely feels out of breath despite its heft.

Roominess

There is room for only five despite the 2011 Range Rover's considerable length. Front driver and passenger enjoy loads of room, but rear legroom fares less well although it should be more than adequate for most. The rear doors make ingress and egress harder than it should be, unfortunately. The boot capacity, enlarged from before, now offers generous loading space, and access to boot space is convenient through the split tailgate.

Running Costs

Fuel economy stands at a miserable 8.6 km/litre. Expect to see significant servicing bills, as is normally the case for most luxury brands. Depreciation should be kept in check, with both the reputable Range Rover brand and the relative small number of Range Rovers on the second-hand market supporting the resale values.

Value for Money

The BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Porsche Cayenne are the 2011 Range Rover's direct rivals. It is hard to compare between these highly capable cars because each offers something unique. But there are two clear factors that differentiate the Range Rover—exclusivity and, of course, off-roading abilities. A Range Rover is arguably rarer on the roads than a Cayenne. Off-road, the 2011 Range Rover trumps all, and on-road, it will at least give the Q7 and M-Class a run for your money.

Equipment

The comprehensive equipment list includes fully-independent electronic air suspension, electric sunroof, leather seats with electric adjustments for driver and front passenger, leather multi-functional steering wheel, Park Distance Control with rear view camera, power-fold exterior mirrors, rain sensor, dual zone climate control air-conditioning with additional vents, 14-speaker digital surround system, automatic headlights, memory settings for driver´s seat, steering wheel and exterior mirrors, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Safety kit includes Dynamic Stability Control, airbags for two rows, and Electronic Traction Control among others.

Environment

Emitting 299 grams/km of carbon dioxide and consuming 8.6 km/litre of fuel, the 2011 Range Rover is not “green” by any measures. The model range of mostly high-powered, heavy SUVs makes Land Rover one of the worst-polluting automakers in the market.
